Edith Esubok tries to send her daughter Ivana to camp every year.
After recently starting to work again, the single mother needed help to pay for it this year. A camp director told her about the Sunshine Fund and she’s thankful they did.
“It was a miracle for us. It really helped us a lot and went a very long way,” she said. “I was worried how I was going to pull it off for a long time.”
The Sunshine Fund, through the Manitoba Camping Association, helps children experience the benefits of camp by providing financial assistance to low-income families.
Applications are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis and the number of children available to be sponsored depends on donations and grants.
This was Esubok’s first time applying for the fund and she gave it a glowing review.
“I’ve already told two friends about them. I don’t think I have words to convey what they are doing,” she said. “My daughter loves going to camp and if it weren’t for the Sunshine Fund, I would have to look for a way to cut down and make that happen. To have a program take off that burden is amazing. They are giving her an opportunity to do what she likes.”
Ivana attended InterVarsity Pioneer Camp this summer, where she got to experience new things and make new friends.
“Being an only child, it’s a great time to mix with other children and spend time with them,” Esubok said. “She still sees other kids at school and church, but at camp, she’s living with other kids, just like having siblings and she’s making friends.”
One of Ivana’s favourite activities at camp is swimming and she recently discovered some new food that she enjoys. The only negative about camp for Ivana was that she had to leave.
“She was like, ‘wow, this summer went by so quick.’ She wishes she was still at camp and is already looking forward to next year.”
The application process for the fund was quick and easy and she’s looking to apply again next year, Esubok said.
