Three charged with Parc La Salle slaying

Three Winnipeg men have been charged in connection with the slaying of a man in the Parc La Salle neighbourhood of St. Norbert last July.

The men, aged 26, 42 and 38, have all been charged with second-degree murder. The 42-year-old man has also been charged with being in possession of a prohibited weapon contrary to a prohibition order.

All three have been detained in custody.

Salah Falah Hasan, 59, died after being shot in July 3 at about 3 a.m., in a residence in the 200 block of Houde Drive.

At the time, a neighbour told the Free Press Hasan had been stabbed and had his tires slashed earlier in the year and feared he was being targeted.

Woman in wheelchair hospitalized after violent robbery

Winnipeg police are asking for the public’s help after a woman in a wheelchair was hospitalized for a month after a violent attack and robbery.

Police said on Thursday that the 62-year-old woman was in her wheelchair in a back lane near Hargrave Street and Ellice Avenue on July 20 when she was attacked from behind and fell to the ground.

The woman suffered a severe injury that left her hospitalized for more than a month.

Police said the woman doesn’t remember much about the robbery, including the exact time and location, but her wallet and jewellery were stolen and she thinks a bystander helped her back into her wheelchair.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Police seek suspect after woman, 72, carjacked in Norwood

Winnipeg police are seeking a suspect after a 72-year-old woman was carjacked Wednesday afternoon in Norwood East.

The victim went to her parked vehicle near Tache Avenue and Horace Street at about 3:45 p.m. when a man confronted her, police said Thursday. The man tried to take her keys from her hand, punched her and eventually dragged her from the vehicle and drove off, police said.

The victim was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Police have not yet found the stolen SUV, a green 2014 Subaru Forester with Manitoba license plate FCM 461.

Police described the suspect as a man between 20-and-30-years-old, about 6-0 tall with an average build. He had dark, shoulder-length hair and fair skin. He was wearing all black during the incident.

Major crimes investigators are handling the case and ask anyone with information to call the unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

WRHA expands walk-in clinic hours

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority will expand walk-in clinic hours at five of its Access connected care clinics around the city starting Nov. 1.

They will be open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting in November.

The expanded hours are intended to reduce some of the pressure on hospital emergency and urgent care centres, where patients have faced lengthy waits.

The WRHA also said patients can go online to see wait times for the five walk-in connected clinics starting today by visiting myrightcare.ca.

Patrick won’t play this season for Vegas

Winnipeg product Nolan Patrick will be sidelined for the entire 2022-23 NHL season, Vegas Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon confirmed today at a press conference during the team’s training camp.

The former Brandon Wheat Kings star and second-overall pick at the 2017 NHL Draft has been hampered with injuries, which have included lingering concussion issues.

Patrick has 32 goals and 45 assists in 222 games in four seasons, the bulk spent in Philadelphia.

COVID cases, hospitalizations increasing

Manitoba recorded an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations last week.

The province’s epidemiological report for the week of Sept. 11 to Sept 17 also showed a higher test positivity rate, at 22 per cent, but fewer lab tests were conducted compared with the week before.

There were 377 PCR-confirmed cases of COVID-19 detected compared with 342 cases the previous week, but the average daily number of people tested decreased from 327 to 286. (Most of Manitoba’s COVID-19 cases aren’t being counted because most people no longer have access to PCR lab tests).

The province announced 87 hospital admissions, including 11 patients in intensive care, and two deaths linked to COVID-19 for last week. Its retroactive tally was updated to include six additional deaths and 153 additional hospital admissions.

The full report is posted here.

Man pulls out gun in St. Andrews

Selkirk RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance after a firearm incident in the RM of St Andrews on Wednesday.

A white Nissan was driving east on St. Andrews Road when it almost struck several children outside the St. Andrew Community Centre, according to police.

An adult witness who saw the car stop at the nearby school approached the vehicle when a passenger allegedly pulled out a handgun and ran toward him. The victim ran away and called 911. Selkirk RCMP officers patrolled the area but were unable to locate the vehicle, described as a newer white Nissan SUV with a gold Blue Bomber Manitoba licence plate beginning B08.

Police do not have a description of the driver. The passenger is described as Caucasian in his late teens, 5-foot-10 to 6-feet tall, wearing a white T-shirt and white backward ballcap. Anyone with information is asked to contact Selkirk RCMP at 204-482-1222.
