Lambos, Pederson spark Ice

Defenceman Carson Lambos and left-winger Owen Pederson had a goal and three assists each to pace the Winnipeg Ice to a 5-3 WHL win over the host Kamloops Blazers in WHL action Friday night.

Matthew Savoie, Connor McClennon and Zach Benson also scored Winnipeg, which improved to a league-best 10-1-0-0. Goaltender Daniel Hauser made 42 saves for his eighth win in as many starts.

Kaden Hammell, Daylan Kuefler and Fraser Minten scored for the Blazers.

Winnipeg concludes an eight-game road trip against the Kelowna Rockets tonight.

Teenager charged with series of gun-related crimes

Winnipeg police have charged a 17-year-old boy with a series of gun-related crimes dating back to Sept. 29.

Early Thursday morning, officers responded to reports of shots being fired in the 500 block of Spence Street. Upon arrival, they found a suspect standing near a taxi cab parked in the middle of the road.

When the suspect refused to comply with directions, officers subdued him with a Taser. They then recovered two firearms from the cab, including a makeshift handgun, police said in a Saturday press release.

A subsequent investigation revealed a nearby home had been shot at.

Police believe the suspect has committed a series of armed robberies and recklessly fired guns into numerous houses and vehicles in recent weeks. One person, a 50-year-old male, was injured in the alleged crime spree.

The youth is facing more than a dozen charges and is in custody, police said.

Four people arrested after home invasion

Four people are in police custody after a home invasion on Waterfront Drive.

On Wednesday at 9:54 p.m., Winnipeg police responded to reports of an assault at an apartment in Waterfront’s 300 block. Arriving officers found two female victims, both in their 20s, with injuries. The women declined medical attention, police said in a Saturday press release.

Police tracked four suspects by helicopter, later arresting them near Rupert Avenue and Lily Street.

Officers found a can of bear spray, a small amount of crack cocaine and a cellphone stolen from the Waterfront apartment in the suspects’ possession, the release said.

All four suspects have been charged with robbery.

Second Legislature encampment dismantled

An encampment on the east side of the Manitoba Legislative Building was dismantled Saturday morning.

The camp was established in June 2021 to maintain a sacred fire until all unmarked graves at former residential schools are identified.

The move comes a little more than two weeks after a second, unaffiliated encampment on the north side of the legislative grounds was dismantled.

Both encampments were given eviction notices on Aug. 17 and given a week to vacate.

Bowness back behind bench after COVID battle

Winnipeg Jets head coach Rick Bowness will make his delayed regular-season debut tonight as his club hosts the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Bowness missed the team’s first four games as he battled COVID. They went 2-2-0 in that span.

“It hit me hard,” the 67-year–old said following the morning skate at Canada Life Centre.

Puck drop is set for 6 p.m.

Connor Hellebuyck starts in net for Winnipeg, which will go with the same 18 skaters who lost 5-2 in Vegas on Thursday night. Kyle Capobianco and Dominic Toninato are the healthy scratches, while Dylan Samberg remains day-to-day with an injury. Nikolaj Ehlers, placed on injured reserve Friday, will miss a third straight game.

Bowness said the hope is Ehlers will be back in the lineup by next week.

Catellier found wide receiver AK Gassama seven times for 142 yards and one touchdown to help the Bisons improve to 3-4 and sole possession of fourth place in the conference with one regular-season game remaining. The Bears are in fifth place at 2-5.

Jets, Leafs tied 1-1 after one period

It’s a raucous atmosphere at Canada Life Centre, where the Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs traded goals in the opening period.

Pierre-Luc Dubois opened the scoring for the home team, but John Tavares tied it a few minutes later for the visitors on the power play.

Shots are 9-8 for the Maple Leafs through 20 minutes.

This is the first of a two-game homestand from the 2-2-0 Jets. They’ll host the St. Louis Blues on Monday night.
