Pedestrian dead after St. Boniface collision

A man in his 50s has died after he was hit by a vehicle in St. Boniface Sunday evening.

Winnipeg police and fire paramedics were called to the 100 block of Dumoulin Street at about 7:30 p.m. for the reported collision, where they found the victim.

He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died, police said. The driver, a man in his 20s, remained at the scene and spoke with police.

Traffic investigators have asked anyone with information or who witnessed the collision to call the division at 204-986-7085.

Man injured in Kingston Row carjacking

A man in his 40s was hurt in a carjacking on Kingston Row Sunday night.

Winnipeg police were called to the first 100 block of the street for a reported assault at about 10:45 p.m., where they found the victim. He told officers he had been struck with a weapon before paramedics took him to hospital in stable condition.

Police said three men had been in the area, trying to open the doors to homes and rummaging through vehicles. The victim had confronted the men, who attacked him before stealing his car keys and vehicle, police said.

Major crimes investigators have not made any arrests in the case and ask anyone with information or home surveillance to contact the unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

Schools get more funding to help newcomer students

The province announced $900,000 to boost help for schools providing supports for newcomers entering Manitoba’s education system this school year.

The Intensive Newcomer Support Grant is an application-based annual grant. It supports newcomer students, many of whom come from refugee backgrounds, whose schooling has been disrupted or whose literacy is low.

The additional funding for the grant program brings the total amount of support to $1.8 million for this school year.

School divisions are experiencing a significantly higher demand for newcomer resources due in part to an influx of newcomers fleeing the brutal war of aggression in Ukraine, a Manitoba government press release said.

Fatal collision under investigation

A 60-year-old man from the rural municipality of De Salaberry has died in a car crash.

The pickup truck the man was driving went into the ditch at full speed at the end of a road in the RM of Ritchot at around 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5, RCMP stated in a news release Monday. The initial police investigation determined the man was not wearing a seat belt and may not have known he was nearing the end of the road when travelling north on Krahn Road near the intersection of Doerksen Road.

“It appears the male was not aware the road ended as there were no visible attempts made to stop the vehicle,” Manitoba RCMP stated, adding the investigation is ongoing.

Police seek suspect in pair of violent bus stop robberies

Winnipeg police are searching for an 18-year-old man accused in two violent robberies at a bus stop in Tyndall Park in recent days.

On Nov. 2, an 18-year-old was slashed with a knife and punched before he was robbed at the stop at Keewatin Street and Burrows Avenue. Two days later, a man in his 20s was attacked with a knife before he was robbed.

Major crimes investigators have obtained an arrest warrant for their suspect, Jayden Isreal Kennedy, on several robbery and weapons offences. He’s 5-11 in height with a thin build, police said, and has several tattoos, including “family” on the left side of his neck and “Josephine Laquette” on the right.

Police warn he may be armed and implore anyone who knows where he is to call 911, the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

WINNIPEG POLICE HANDOUT Jayden Isreal Kennedy, 18, is wanted on a warrant for robbery and weapons offences.
