Woman slain at Sioux Valley Dakota First Nation

A man has been charged with first-degree murder after a woman died of her injuries at the Sioux Valley Dakota First Nation.

Virden RCMP said on Monday a 30-year-old woman was pronounced dead inside a residence on the reserve on Nov. 19 at 6:25 p.m.

RCMP said a man was arrested at the scene.

Ernie Blacksmith, 20, of Sioux Valley Dakota First Nation, has been charged with the slaying. He has been remanded in custody and will make his first court appearance today in Brandon.

RCMP have not released the victim’s identity.

Rittich, Heinola in for Jets tonight

The Winnipeg Jets are making a couple of lineup changes as they try to end a homestand on a winning note tonight.

Defenceman Ville Heinola will make his 2022-23 season debut for the big club when they host the Carolina Hurricanes at Canada Life Centre. He’s expected to take the spot of Kyle Capobianco.

Backup goalie David Rittich gets the start in place of No. 1 netminder Connor Hellebuyck.

Winnipeg (10-5-1) is coming off a 3-0 loss Saturday night to Pittsburgh. They hit the road after this one for three straight in Minnesota, Dallas and Chicago.

House gutted by fire to be demolished

A vacant house on Manitoba Avenue was destroyed by fire late this morning.

The house in the 300 block of Manitoba will be demolished to ensure the fire is extinguished and because it might collapse, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a news release. Firefighters were expected to remain at the scene until later this afternoon.

Crews were sent to the scene shortly before 11 a.m.

Man dead after vehicle crashes, catches fire on rural road

A man was killed when a vehicle crashed into a ditch and caught fire in the RM of Minto-Odanah.

Mounties were sent to the scene of a vehicle fire on Road 106 West, near Road 78 North, at about 7:40 a.m. Saturday, the RCMP said Monday. The fire department was extinguishing the blaze when officers arrived.

An elderly man was found dead just outside the vehicle, RCMP said.

Neepawa RCMP are still working to confirm the man’s identity.

Missing woman last seen downtown

Winnipeg police are asking for the public’s help in finding a missing woman.
Corina Anderson, 33, was last week in the downtown area on Nov. 1, the Winnipeg Police Service said Monday.

She is described as 5-2 in height, with a thin build, long black hair and brown eyes. Anderson was last seen wearing a black parka with silver buttons, and purple and grey boots.

The WPS is asking anyone with information regarding her whereabouts to call their missing persons unit at 204-986-6250.
