CROSS LAKE — It’s a hot, hazy Tuesday evening in northern Manitoba, and Jericho Blacksmith and his buddies are gathered inside a baseball dugout.

There isn’t a glove or bat in sight.

Instead, the young men are engaged in a loud, good-natured race to see who can get blackout drunk the fastest, passing around bottles and cans purchased from the local vendor, which had just been restocked when the weekly truck rolled into town earlier that day.

“Honestly, everything can be pretty brutal around here,” says the 26-year-old lifelong resident, pointing to isolation, a lack of opportunity and relentless boredom.

Low Life Barrel House and Sookram’s Brewing Co. are again joining forces for Better Together, a celebration of both breweries, on Saturday starting at noon. On tap for the festivities: drink specials, a scavenger hunt run, live music, brewery bingo, DJs and food by Big Dawg and Low Life’s own Snack Häus.

And then there’s the beer. The breweries have teamed up on a collaborative brew called Better Together, a pale ale made collaboratively using house yeasts from both breweries. It will be available at both breweries, who are also hosting each others’ beers on their respective taps alongside their own (and even doing some custom blends).

Thirsty Winnipeggers need not worry about driving from place to place — a trolley will be running between the facilities throughout the event, which is free and open to all ages (there will be games for the younger guests and plenty of non-alcoholic options).

Free Press celebrates launch of art exhibit

The Winnipeg Art Gallery has opened its doors to an exhibition focusing on the Winnipeg Free Press and its 150th anniversary.

Headlines: The Art of the News Cycle, which includes works from seven artists from across North America as well as archival material from the Free Press and the gallery’s permanent collection, looks at the many changes that have taken place in how the Free Press and other news organizations let their readers know what’s going on in the world around them.

The exhibit runs through to May 21, 2023 at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
