Another pedestrian dies in crash on city street

A pedestrian is dead after a two-vehicle collision on Route 90 early Saturday morning.

The man is the 11th pedestrian to be killed in a vehicle collision on city streets this year, Winnipeg police said Saturday.

Police received reports of a two-vehicle collision around 2:45 a.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes of Century Street between Portage Avenue and Academy Road.

Police said a pedestrian was struck in the crash and died of his injures.

No other details, including the victim’s age or identity, were available. Police said the drivers remained at the scene, adding more information on the incident will released in the coming days.

The southbound lanes of Century between Ness Avenue and Academy remained closed to traffic Saturday morning as police investigated the crash.

Saturday’s collision is the latest in a string of deadly crashes in the city involving pedestrians this year.

The most recent pedestrian deaths include:

— On Nov. 6, a man in his 50s died after being hit by a vehicle on Dumoulin Street in St. Boniface. The driver, a man in his 20s, remained at the scene.

— On Oct. 24, a 56-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run after he was struck by a vehicle at Notre Dame Avenue and Keewatin Street by an SUV.

— On Oct. 16, Shannon Joan Marie Romaniuk, 24, was killed near the intersection of Portage Avenue and Berry Street after being struck by an SUV. The driver fled.

— On Oct. 9, Jim Aitkenhead, 78, died in hospital after he was hit by a vehicle while crossing Osborne Street. The driver, a woman in her 80s, remained at the scene and spoke with police.
