A fire broke out in a two-and-a-half-story home in the 400 block of Pritchard Avenue on Sunday morning.

All occupants of the house self-evacuated. Neighbouring homes were also evacuated as a precaution. One person was assessed by paramedics on the scene. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Injuries continue to force lineup changes for Jets

The Winnipeg Jets are rolling. But injuries continue to dictate lineup changes for a club that has won four straight games.

Defenceman Logan Stanley is the latest to go down, suffering a lower-body ailment in Friday’s 3-1 victory in Chicago. He won’t play tonight as the Jets begin a three-game homestand by hosting the Washington Capitals (6 p.m.). Dylan Samberg, a healthy scratch the past two games, will take his spot.

Forward Saku Maenalanen will miss a second straight game with an upper-body injury suffered in Thursday’s 5-2 win in St. Louis.

Nikolaj Ehlers and Mason Appleton are also currently sidelined.

Connor Hellebuyck starts in goal tonight for the Jets, while defenceman Kyle Capobianco projects to be the lone healthy scratch. However, the club is likely to recall a forward from the Manitoba Moose prior to puck drop.

Police officer injured while arresting armed suspect

A police officer was injured while trying to arrest a man armed with a handgun last week.

The incident took place at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Dec. 9, when WPS officers located a man with a handgun at a business in the 1400 block of St. Matthews Avenue.

After a brief struggle, officers managed to subdue and arrest the suspect. A woman (known to the man), who tried to stop the officers, was also taken into custody.

During the scuffle, one police officer suffered an upper-body injury and was taken to the hospital.

A handgun, some ammunition, 7 gm of cocaine, around $1,500 in cash, and a mobile phone were seized as evidence from both suspects.

A 26-year-old man from Winnipeg has been charged with carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, possession of a firearm, resisting a police officer, and assaulting a police officer with a weapon, among others.

He was detained in custody.

A 23-year-old female, also from Winnipeg, is facing charges including possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking and obstructing a peace officer.

She was released with an undertaking.

Group blocks access to Brady Road landfill to call for search

About two dozen people are blocking access to the Brady Road landfill on Winnipeg’s southern limits to call for a halt to operations and searches at two sites for missing and murdered Indigenous women.

The group, including members of Morgan Harris’s family, is renewing calls for police to search the Prairie Green Landfill just north of the city, where police believe the remains of Harris, 39, and Marcedes Myran, 26, are located.

Police allege Harris, Myran, Rebecca Contois, 24, and an unidentified woman, who was named Buffalo Woman by elders, were killed by Jeremy Skibicki, who is charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

Einarson wins Grand Slam title in Oakville

Kerri Einarson of Gimli has won the Masters women’s curling title.

Einarson, third Val Sweeting, second Shannon Birchard and lead Briane Harris, defeated the Rachel Homan team of Ottawa 6-5 in an extra end Sunday afternoon to claim the Grand Slam of Curling tour victory in Oakville, Ont.

It’s Einarson’s first Grand Slam title of the 2022-23 competitive season but second of the calendar year. The Manitoba squad won the Champions Cup in early May in Olds, Alta.

The world’s second-ranked team strung together six consecutive victories to reach the Masters final. Einarson now has five GSOC titles to her credit.

Einarson, the reigning three-time Scotties Tournament of Hearts national women’s champion, had the hammer in the extra end and made the most of it, making a double-takeout to score one.
