Carbon monoxide levels force Redwood Avenue home evacuation

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews evacuated four people from a Redwood Avenue home that had high levels of carbon monoxide Monday evening.

Crews were called to the home at around 7:22 p.m. on Boxing Day for a medical emergency. Once inside, the firefighters’ portable carbon monoxide alarms went off.

Crews got out everyone of the house safely, while the city’s emergency social services team worked to help find the four people somewhere to stay until their home is safe to re-enter.

No one was hurt. The fire department has not said what led to the high levels of the toxic gas.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews were called to the apartment In the 300 block of Furby Street just before 4 a.m., where they found smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters got inside and got the blaze under control within an hour, the WFPS said. No one was reported hurt.

A Winnipeg Transit bus was parked at the scene for the evacuated residents to stay warm in, while city emergency social services workers found temporary accommodation for five people.

Winnipeg Jets forward Cole Perfetti will be out between 7-10 days with an upper-body injury suffered last Thursday in Boston.

Coach Rick Bowness provided the update this morning as his club returned from a three-day holiday break.

Winnipeg faces Minnesota tonight at Canada Life Centre. Perfetti will miss a second straight game, joining six other regulars (Nikolaj Ehlers, Blake Wheeler, Mason Appleton, Saku Maenalanen, Nate Schmidt and Logan Stanley) on the injured list.

Connor Hellebuyck starts in net for the Jets, who have lost two straight games and sit at 21-12-1. Puck drop is 7 p.m.

The Leaf closed after water main break

Assiniboine Park attraction The Leaf has closed for two days just weeks after opening to the public due to a water main break.

There was a burst pipe and clean water leak at the horticultural space on Christmas Day. The Leaf will reopen Wednesday. The restaurant inside The Leaf, Gather Craft Kitchen & Bar, is set to reopen Thursday.

A social media post from Assiniboine Park Conservancy said it can not give automatic refunds or transfer ticket dates. Ticketholders have to complete an online form to request a refund.

The burst pipe is another hurdle after the troubled journey to The Leaf’s opening day. The project was originally slated to open in late 2020 and cost $75 million — but its final price tag was $130 million and its opening came after three civil lawsuits around the space filed last year.

Opening day at The Leaf on Dec. 3 saw over 1,000 visitors.
