The volunteers behind a West End pilot project that aims to distribute free produce and pantry items to area residents are reorganizing after their refrigerator was stolen.
The Winnipeg Community Fridge, located at 689 Maryland St., was launched in autumn by a local collective looking to support Winnipeggers in search of resources without barriers.
“The fridge and heater have been stolen. It’s unfortunate but something we have had in our minds as a possibility,” states an Instagram post made by @winnipegcommunityfridge on Saturday evening.
“We will persevere but it will take us some time to get replacements in.”
Community members are still welcome to donate non-perishiable items — oatmeal, rice and spices, among other items — to the pantry area.
Prior to the fridge being removed, donors were being asked to leave any liquid items in the fridge because the cabinet portion of the shelter is not winterized.
