Charges laid after stolen auto crash downtown

11:31 AM

A 25-year-old man is facing charges after a crash involving a stolen vehicle.

The Winnipeg Police Service said the vehicle was stolen Monday while it was left running in a parking lot in the northeast part of the city. Officers spotted the vehicle driving past police headquarters downtown at about 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said the man behind the wheel then drove erratically and ignored speed limits, traffic control devices, one-way directions and slippery road conditions downtown. The vehicle eventually went through a red light on Hargrave Street and hit a vehicle heading east on McDermot Avenue. Both vehicles collided with a traffic control standard, knocking it down.

The driver of the stolen vehicle fled on foot and was arrested in the 300 block of William Avenue.

The lone occupant of the second vehicle, a man in his 60s, was transported to hospital in stable condition.

The driver of the stolen vehicle was transported to hospital as a precaution and released. He is facing several charges.

Multiple schools placed on lockdown after reports of an armed person

4:15 PM

Students in numerous Winnipeg schools were placed in lockdown Thursday after Winnipeg police received a report of a person potentially carrying a firearm.

Around 1:30 p.m., officers responded to Fort Richmond Collegiate in the Fort Richmond neighbourhood. Police placed the high school, along with nearby schools, under a “hold and secure” protocol, said WPS Const. Dani McKinnon.

Officers located a teenage male off of school property and placed him under arrest. An airsoft gun was seized. The lockdowns ended around 2:30 p.m., McKinnon said.

Nobody was injured, and police are investigating.

Police could not confirm which other schools were placed on lockdown.

The collegiate is in the Pembina Trails school division. Acadia Junior High and Richmond Kings Nursery School are located nearby.
