Jace Freeman was eliminated from title contention with a 7-3 quarter-final loss to Alberta’s Zachary Davis, the eventual gold medallist, Friday morning.

“We fought and hung in there as long as we could and we weren’t we weren’t miles away,” said Manitoba coach Graham Freeman by phone. “An inch or two on a couple of different shots and the result could have flipped around.”

Freeman’s team was trailing 4-3 when it gave up three in the fifth and was unable to recover.

“We were one down without last rock and so we maybe took a few extra chances,” said Graham Freeman.

The Freeman team, which also includes lead Rylan Graham, second Jack Steski and third Elias Huminicki, will represent Manitoba at the Canada Winter Games in P.E.I. later this month.

Manitoba’s other boys team, skipped by Heather’s Ronan Peterson, completed the round robin with a 3-3 record and did not qualify for the playoffs.

Peterson’s team, which also included third Nick Senff, second Roan Hunker and lead Nathan Kelly, beat Ontario’s Kyle Stratton in consolation play to finish 13th.

In girls action, 18-year-old St. Vital skip Grace Beaudry dropped a 6-2 decision to Quebec’s Jolianne Fortin in Saturday’s ninth-place game.

Beaudry, who qualified for nationals by virtue of finishing second to Altona’s Dayna Wahl at U18 provincials, was joined by third Cassidy Dundas, 17-year-old from Onanole, second Lauren Evason, a 16-year-old from St. Adolphe and lead Tessa Terrick, a 17-year-old from McCreary.

Wahl, whose team includes lead Gillian Hildebrand, second Anna Marie Ginters and third Piper Stoesz, lost 5-1 to P.E.I.’s Ella Lenentine in consolation action.

Wahl’s foursome will represent Manitoba at the Canada Winter Games.
