Canada is moving closer to the playoffs at the 2023 World Women’s Curling Championship, following a crucial victory early this morning in Sweden.

Kerri Einarson of Gimli downed Turkey’s Dilsat Yildiz 10-4 in eight ends to start the last day of round-robin play.

As many as eight of the 13 competing teams are still alive for the six playoff spots.

Manitoba Avenue bungalow to be torn down after fires: WFPS

9:13 AM

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service has ordered a vacant home in the William Whyte neighbourhood be demolished after a fire Thursday evening.

Fire crews were called to the bungalow on the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue just before 8 p.m. and found smoke billowing from the building, the fire service said Friday.

They got inside and extinguished the flames within about 10 minutes. Firefighters searched the structure and found no one inside.

The home had been damaged by a fire in February this year, WFPS said, and crews determined the building’s structural integrity was compromised. WFPS is making arrangements for the demolition, the service said.

The 6-foot-4 guard is the third addition to the club’s roster.

RCC Polytech, Assiniboine College union members vote in favour of strike

10:15 AM

Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union members working at Red River College Polytechnic and Assiniboine Community College voted in favour of strike action Thursday night.

“We received a strong strike mandate from our members,” MGEU spokesperson Jodee Mason said by phone Friday.

Mason could not reveal the per cent of members who voted in support.

The mandate does not necessarily mean a strike will happen, but gives the union the authority to take action amid negotiations.

The union represents roughly 1,900 members at the two post-secondary schools and is calling for increased wages.

The parties returned to the bargaining table at 10 a.m.

Negotiations began in October 2021.

Einarson loses to Denmark, clinches playoff spot

11:11 AM

Canada’s Kerri Einarson has finished the World Women’s Curling Championship round robin with a 7-5 record.

After starting Friday with a 10-4 decision over Turkey’s Dilsat Yildiz, the Gimli skip dropped an 11-5 result to Denmark’s Madeleine Dupont.

A victory over Denmark would’ve earned Einarson the No. 2 seed and a bye to the semi-final, but with the loss, Canada’s place in the playoff picture has yet to be decided. Switzerland has clinched first place with an undefeated record, but the order of the other five playoff teams — Canada, Sweden, Italy, Norway and Japan — won’t be decided until after this afternoon’s final round robin draw.

The United States, Germany, Korea, Turkey, Denmark, Scotland, and New Zealand have all been eliminated.

The first round of playoffs take place tomorrow at 4 a.m. CT. The semifinals are at 10 a.m. CT.
