Brady Road landfill reopens

10:03 AM

The Brady Road Landfill has reopened, one week after the body of an Indigenous mother was found at the site.

The City of Winnipeg tweeted that the landfill was open Monday morning after it closed following the discovery on the previous Monday.

Police initially described the death of Linda Mary Beardy, 33, to be suspicious. However, police later said they do not believe the case was a homicide. The Winnipeg Police Service says surveillance tape shows Beardy leaving a Pembina Highway store and entering a garbage bin on the day of her death.

The city also closed the landfill for more than two weeks in December and January, after a group set up a blockade and a camp to call for a search for human remains and more action to prevent violence against Indigenous women and girls.

Fire sparks in Ross Avenue home twice in three days

3:26 PM

Winnipeg firefighters put out a blaze in a Ross Avenue home Monday morning – the second fire in the house in three days.

A Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crew driving by the 500 block of Ross Avenue, between Isabel and Sherbrook streets, spotted smoke coming from the two-storey house at about 9:35 a.m.

Firefighters got inside and extinguished the flames in just under an hour. No one was hurt, WFPS said.

Crews were called to the same house on Saturday at about 11:10 p.m. WFPS said at the time four people got out safely on their own, before city social services workers helped them find places to stay temporarily.

WFPS said the two fires are still under investigation.

Jets lead Sharks 3-1 after first period

6:50 PM

The Winnipeg Jets lead the San Jose Sharks 3-1 after one period at Canada Life Centre.

Erik Karlsson opened the scoring for the visitors just 20 seconds into the game. But the home team poured it on after that.

Pierre-Luc Dubois, Adam Lowry and Kyle Connor all scored to build a comfortable lead.

Shots are 14-5 for the Jets through 20 minutes.

Winnipeg can move even closer to locking up a playoff spot with a victory. They began the night one point ahead of Calgary, and three points up on Nashville, for the final wildcard spot.
