A woman was sexually assaulted by a stranger while jogging in a Charleswood neighbourhood Sunday morning, said police, who are seeking the public’s help to locate the attacker.

Police said a man approached the woman from behind and touched her inappropriately while she was running south on Charleswood Road, just north of Rannock Avenue, at about 10:45 a.m.

The woman screamed, and the man fled through a school parking lot.

West District police officers met with the woman after the assault was reported.

She was not physically injured, police said in a news release Monday.

The sex crimes unit, which is investigating the daylight assault, has a potential identity of the suspect.

He is in his 20s, has a slim build and was wearing a green army-style jacket with a grey hoodie underneath and camouflage-style pants.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6245.

Schools in the area were notified of the incident. A letter was sent to alert parents and guardians of children who attend Oak Park High School, which is located close to the scene.

“We want to keep you aware and our community safe,” the letter states. “A suspect has been identified and police are making attempts to locate him as we speak. We will provide further updates as they arise.”

A woman who lives in the area was shaken after learning of the incident.

“It makes me feel sick and scared,” said the woman, who declined to give her name, while she picked up her child from school. “At 10:45 on a Sunday morning, you would think you’d be safe. It turns out you’re not.

“You can’t be safe anywhere.”

The woman said the incident has made her feel uneasy about going for a run in the neighbourhood, which is an activity she has been looking forward to since snow began to melt.

“It’s made me think twice. I wanted to go out running (Monday), and immediately after hearing that I thought, I’m not going to go,” she said. “It shouldn’t be that way.”

In September, Jordan Andrew Bruyere, 30, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for attacking three women and a teenage girl on Winnipeg’s river trail system between April and August 2021.

He pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, assault, and assault with a weapon.
