John Anderson of ESPN received backlash after inappropriate comments regarding Zach Whitecloud’s name on a highlight show Monday night.

“What kind of name is Whitecloud? Great name if you’re a toilet paper,” Anderson said.

Anderson since apologized to Whitecloud, who spoke with the media on Tuesday.

“I don’t want to be in front of all you guys talking about this,” Whitecloud said.

“But with that comes an opportunity to allow not just John and myself but everyone to learn from this incident, to move forward and make sure these things don’t happen again.”

The 26-year-old Brandonite is a member of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, about 50 km west of Brandon.

He scored his first post-season goal in a 5-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday, helping Vegas to a 2-1 series lead entering Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinal tonight.

“I’m proud of my culture, I’m proud of where I come from, where I was raised, who I was raised by,” Whitecloud said.

“I carry my grandfather’s last name and nothing makes me more proud than to be able to do that.

“We were raised to be the first ones to reach out and offer help, so that’s why I reached out to John this morning and wanted to make sure that he understood that I understood that people make mistakes and he acknowledges that. He’s… trying to move forward in the right direction and be better from it.”
