The departure of an acting medical director at the Health Sciences Centre ER is being described as a “blow to morale” for nurses.
On May 11, the HSC notified staff a search is ongoing for a new medical director for the Winnipeg hospital’s adult emergency department, and the last day for acting director Dr. Shelly Zubert would be May 12.
In a statement, a Shared Health spokesperson thanked Zubert for her service through the COVID-19 pandemic, adding Zubert is encouraged to apply for the permanent position if she so chooses.

On May 11, the HSC notified staff a search is ongoing for a new medical director for the ER department, and the last day for acting director Dr. Shelly Zubert would be May 12.
Zubert is expected to continue practicing in the ER.
“We thank her for her efforts in leading the department during a challenging time in health care,” the spokesperson stated.
The position was meant to be interim role, they said.
“HSC Winnipeg appointed a medical director to its adult emergency department for an interim period of time during an earlier stage of the pandemic, with the understanding the permanent position would be posted once the health system returned to more normal operations. That is now occurring, so a search for a permanent medical lead is underway,” the statement reads in part.
However, two HSC ER nurses described Zubert as a strong advocate for the department and expressed shock at her departure from the leadership role.
The Manitoba Nurses Union said the departure is “uncharacteristic” of the physician.
“According to staff, this is very uncharacteristic of Dr. Shelley Zubert, who has been a true champion in that department. Sadly, this is yet one more blow to morale,” a MNU spokesperson stated.
Zubert couldn’t be reached for comment.
