A man is facing weapons charges for allegedly buying guns legally and handing them over to a gang member.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s firearms investigations and enforcement unit began looking into the straw purchases of a number of firearms and ammunition in March. A straw purchase is when someone serves as a proxy buyer for another person.

Police said the items were bought from a local business and then either sold or traded to a known gang member for cash or illicit drugs between July 2021 and last November.

The guns included six .22-calibre rifles, a 9mm rifle and various ammunition.

Police found and seized one of the .22-calibre rifles in September.

The police unit enforced a search warrant at an Inwood home with the help of the RCMP and the National Weapons Enforcement Support Team on May 16.

Officers seized a firearms possession acquisition licence, a .50-calibre rifle, a rifle-style pellet gun, ammunition and a cellphone.

A 23-year-old Winnipeg man has been arrested and is facing two counts of

weapons trafficking. He was released from custody.
