Selkirk RCMP are investigating after human remains were found on the shore of Lake Winnipeg near Matlock Beach Saturday.
Officers were called to the beach at about 11:45 a.m.
Manitoba RCMP spokesman Paul Manaigre said he was unsure of the condition of the body, which washed up on the shore, prompting the call to Mounties.
The identity of the remains is unknown at this point.
“We suspect it may be related to a missing person investigation out of Winnipeg from about a week ago but can’t say for sure until the identity has been confirmed,” said Manaigre.
“We will have to wait for the results of the autopsy in relation to determining the cause of death and the person’s identity.”
Local Mounties, along with the province’s chief medical examiner’s office, are investigating. The death has not been ruled criminal at this point.
The Interlake-area beach, which is about 70 kilometres north of Winnipeg, is off of Highway 9, just south of Winnipeg Beach.
The beach is situated in the Village of Dunnottar, which includes Matlock, Ponemah and Whytewold, has a population of 989, according to 2021 census data.
