Arrest made in North Point Douglas homicide

A man has been arrested in connection with a slaying earlier this month in North Point Douglas.

Winnipeg police said on Tuesday that Aaron Wayne Azure, 38, was arrested by police in the same neighbourhood on Monday. He has been charged with manslaughter and detained in custody.

Vincent Brian Kipling, 31, was found near Main Street and Stella Avenue with serious injuries on May 10 at about 10:50 p.m.

Kipling was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries.

 

Two men, one boy arrested after downtown area assaults

Two men in their 20s and a 12-year-old boy are facing charges of aggravated assault after an altercation near the downtown core early Sunday.

Winnipeg police responded to reports of an injured man in the 100 block of Mayfair Avenue at around 7:40 a.m.

A 25-year-old man suffering from serious upper-body injuries was transported to hospital in critical condition. A second man, age 20, was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

“A group was sleeping near the riverbank when the 25-year-old victim was attacked due to a previous dispute over property,” the WPS said. “The second victim also sustained numerous upper-body injuries during the incident.”

Three suspects have been arrested. A 26-year-old man, a 20-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy are facing two counts each of aggravated assault.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

‘Authority figure’ accused of sexually assaulting youth in First Nation

Manitoba RCMP say they have arrested an authority figure who is accused of sexually assaulting a youth in a First Nation community.

More details will be released at a 1 p.m. news conference.

Police believe there could be more victims.

Man fatally stabbed on Burrows Avenue

City police are investigating the city’s latest homicide after a man was stabbed on Burrows Avenue.

Winnipeg Police Service officers were sent to the 400 block of Burrows at about 3:45 a.m. and found a 22-year-old male who had been stabbed.

The man was transported to hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries, the WPS said late Tuesday morning.

No arrests have been made. Police are asking anyone with information about the case or security video that might help investigators to call the homicide unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS.

Serious crash closes Broadway and Sherbrook

12:10 PM

A serious crash at Broadway and Sherbrook Street has resulted in road closures.

An SUV was on its side with people in the vehicle shortly after noon, according to a Free Press photographer at the scene.

Police said eastbound Broadway is closed between Maryland and Furby streets, while westbound traffic is being diverted onto Sherbrook.

Sherbrook, a one-way northbound street, is shut at Sara Avenue.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.

Collaros to sit out Friday’s preseason finale

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have decided to sit out No. 1 quarterback Zach Collaros in Friday’s preseason finale against the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Collaros, the CFL’s reigning two-time most outstanding player, took part in the club’s first preseason game on Saturday — a 25-23 triumph over the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium. Collaros played the first quarter and the first five minutes of the second, playing in five total series, going 5-for-8 passing for 93 yards and a 67-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Lawler.

With Collaros out, the Bombers will go with quarterbacks Dru Brown, Tyrrell Pigrome and Josh Jones against the Roughriders.

Manitoba well represented in Under 21 men’s national volleyball team roster

Volleyball Canada released the roster for the Under 21 men’s national team that will compete in upcoming tournaments and a quarter of the team hails from Manitoba.

The 16 man roster includes Manitoba’s own Jonah Dueck, Spencer Grahame, Josh Jehle and Samuel Ludwig. University of Manitoba’s Arnd (Lupo) Ludwig and Mike Stephens were also named as head coach and assistant coach, respectively, for the Canadian squad.

The Canadian team will compete in the NORCECA Men’s U21 Pan American Cup from June 3-11 in La Habana, Cuba, and in the FIVB Men’s U21 World Championships from July 7-16 in Manama, Bahrain.
