A Roman Catholic priest accused of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl on a remote Manitoba First Nation has been released from custody.

Arul Savari, 48, was granted release with the consent of the Crown following an appearance before a judicial justice of the peace Monday.

Savari has been charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and forcible confinement.

RCMP arrested Savari after the girl reported she had been asked to help clean the church and was alone with a priest when she was inappropriately touched.

Savari’s release conditions include requirements he have no contact with the alleged victim, have no contact with children under 16, not attend schools, parks, playgrounds and other areas where children are likely to gather and surrender his passport.

His next court date is June 28.
