Encampment burns near Assiniboine Avenue
4:28 PM
Several tents burned during a fire at a riverbank encampment just after midnight Tuesday.
First responders arrived at an encampment near Assiniboine Avenue around 12:23 a.m. Crews discovered several tents engulfed in flames and smoke. All occupants safely self-evacuated, and no injuries were reported, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a release.
“Temporary encampments are at a heightened risk for fires. Most often, shelters have just one way in and out and are assembled using flammable materials which burn quickly,” WFPS said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
