Eastbound Trans-Canada Highway reopened after deadly crash
8:18 AM
The Trans-Canada Highway has fully reopened at the scene of a deadly crash north of Carberry on Thursday that left 15 people dead.
The eastbound lanes at Highway 5 are now open, the provincial government said in a news release early Friday.
The westbound lanes reopened Thursday afternoon.
Ten people were seriously injured in the fiery crash involving a semi-trailer and a handi-transit type of vehicle full of seniors.
GoFundMe monitoring potential crash fundraising
8:28 AM
The online crowdfunding platform GoFundMe says it is “vigilantly observing” any potential fundraising in connection with a deadly crash near Carberry to ensure they are legitimate.
A spokeswoman said in an email Friday morning that GoFundMe’s trust and safety team is “vigilantly observing the platform for any authentic fundraisers set up to support the victims” of the crash. Fifteen people were killed and 10 seriously injured on the Trans-Canada Highway on Thursday.
“Our specialized crisis response team is actively reviewing each fundraiser, ensuring that the affected individuals can receive prompt, reliable aid,” the email stated.
Ice on the move to Washington
11:47 AM
Winnipeg has lost its Western Hockey League team — again.
The Winnipeg Ice will move to Wenatchee, Wash., after being sold to an ownership group led by David White, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.
The Ice lasted just four seasons in Winnipeg with owner Greg Fettes, who is the CEO of 24-7 Intouch. The team lost the WHL final to the Seattle Thunderbirds this season.
The organization was supposed to build a new arena for the team but never did, instead hosting games at Wayne Fleming Arena on the University of Manitoba campus.
The Manitoba capital was home to the Winnipeg Warriors in the early 1980s before the franchise moved to Moose Jaw, Sask.
Recipients of pandemic visitation pods announced
12:47 PM
Pandemic-era visitation pods at personal care homes across Manitoba will get a second lease on life as on-reserve housing, recreation facilities, animal shelters, food banks and more.
The Manitoba government will donate the 104 shelters it provided to long-term care facilities during the pandemic to 27 groups, including First Nations, non-profits, municipalities and co-operatives.
The province said 55 organizations submitted proposals and 27 were selected to receive the shelters. Organizations are responsible for covering the cost of transporting the buildings to their new home and the government will pay to disconnect the pods and remediate the site.
The list of recipients can be found here.
