Valour FC stumbles late against top-ranked Pacific FC

10:30 AM

Valour FC gave the Canadian Premier League’s top-ranked club all they could handle but faltered late against Pacific FC in a 1-0 loss on the West Coast on Wednesday.

Pacific’s Easton Ongaro broke the deadlock in the 79th minute. Winnipeg’s side dominated possession time (56 per cent) and paced the shot count 12-7, but generated one shot on target in the match.

Valour dropped to 2-6-3 on the season while Pacific improved to 7-3-1.

Valour returns home for a date with the CPL’s newest franchise, Vancouver FC, at IG Field on Sunday (2 p.m.).

Orville Peck pulls out of folk fest lineup

12:44 PM

Orville Peck has postponed all upcoming shows, meaning the masked country singer won’t be headlining the mainstage on Saturday night, July 8, at this year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival.

In an Instagram message posted Wednesday, Peck said he was “completely heartbroken” to make the decision to postpone his shows,  but that he had “come to realize that my current mental and physical health won’t allow me to bring you my best.”

In response to Peck’s announcement, the Winnipeg Folk Festival said “we are currently working hard to bring you a full Saturday night of music on the Main Stage” in an Instagram post of its own, and that festival-goers should check back on the festival app and social media for updates.

Man hospitalized after high-speed fiery St. Vital crash

2:30 PM

A man was rushed to hospital in critical condition after his vehicle slammed into trees in a yard near Victoria Crescent and Delmar Street early Thursday before bursting into flames.

Winnipeg Police Service spokesman Const. Claude Chancy said the call about the single-vehicle crash in the St. Vital neighbourhood came in around 2:20 a.m. He said the driver, whose age he could not immediately confirm, was the only occupant of the vehicle.

“Speed is believed to be a factor,” said Chancy. “The severity of the impact caused the vehicle fire to erupt.”

Chancy said the man has since been upgraded to stable condition. Police are still in the area investigating the collision and it is not yet known when their work will be finished.

Province announces additional addictions treatment spaces

2:40 PM

The province has announced it will provide an additional 513 addictions treatment spaces in Winnipeg, as part of the government’s promise to add 1,000 treatment spaces in Manitoba.

Deputy Premier Cliff Cullen said the province has exceeded that commitment with a total of 1,648 spaces. Most of those spaces were previously announced. Some are for residential treatment beds and some are for day programs through various agencies in rural and northern parts of the province.

The 513 Winnipeg spaces announced today will be paid for with $2.9 million in provincial funding.

RCMP search for missing Dauphin woman

3:16 PM

Mounties are searching for a Dauphin woman who has been missing for more than a week.

Monica Chartrand, 40, was reported missing Wednesday. RCMP say she was last seen by a family member in the evening of June 14. She had talked about travelling to either Winnipeg, Saskatoon or Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Alberta, but she does not have a cell phone and how she would have travelled is not known.

She’s 5-5 and 165 lbs with black hair and brown eyes. Mounties say she has several tattoos of Indigenous art on her neck, forearms and right hand.

RCMP ask anyone who knows where she is to call the Dauphin detachment at 204-622-5020 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.

RCMP HANDOUT Monica Chartrand, 40.

The name of an unidentified man, who Winnipeg police said earlier this week died in hospital of unspecified medical distress, has since been confirmed.

Police said missing person investigators made contact with family members of the man, who died on May 31 after being found on the 600 block of Sherburn Street, after making an appeal for help to the public on Wednesday.

Police said they would not release further details of the death to respect the family’s privacy.
