Lynn Williams scores in Gotham win before heading to the World Cup

Lynn Williams and Allie Long scored in Gotham’s 2-1 win at home against the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Williams scored less than a minute into the second half when she collected a throw-in and turned quickly to chip a shot into the far post with her left foot.

After returning from a 50-minute lightning delay, the Red Stars equalized in the 55th minute. Cari Roccaro ran onto a cutback pass from Sarah Griffith and slammed her shot into the goal.

Long put Gotham (6-4-3) up again in the 70th, chipping a free kick over goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher from about 25 yards out. The shot hit the crossbar and spun into the goal at Red Bull Arena.

Williams’ seventh goal this season was her last before departing for her first World Cup. She was named to the U.S. roster for the upcoming tournament in Australia and New Zealand.

Teammates Kristie Mewis and Kelley O’Hara will join her on the U.S. squad, while Ifeoma Onumonu will represent Nigeria. Sinead Farrelly (Republic of Ireland) and Bruninha (Brazil) should also be named to their team’s final rosters this week.

Two Red Stars (3-9-1) players will feature in the World Cup. Naeher was named to the U.S. roster while Cheyna Matthews will represent Jamaica.

ANGEL CITY 0, HOUSTON DASH 0

For the second week in a row, the Houston Dash had to play down a player for a long stretch, and for the second week in a row, the team held on for a scoreless draw — this time against Angel City.

Katie Lind was shown a red card in the 58th minute for denying a goal-scoring opportunity when Sydney Leroux had a breakaway.

After the red card, Angel City (3-6-4) hit the post twice — and Houston once — as both teams looked dangerous but couldn’t score at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

Dash (4-3-6) goalkeeper Jane Campbell made four saves to earn her sixth shutout of the season. After 13 matches, Houston has given up the fewest goals in the NWSL (10).

Angel City’s Julie Ertz and Alyssa Thompson are now departing for the World Cup where they will represent the U.S. Teammate Jun Endo was called up by Japan.

Houston’s Michelle Alozie (Nigeria) and Havana Solaun (Jamaica) will also be at the tournament, while Allysha Chapman, Nichelle Prince, and Sophie Schmidt were named to Canada’s preliminary roster.
