Winnipeg woman charged with manslaughter

9:30 AM

A Winnipeg woman believed to have been evading police has been arrested and charged with manslaughter.

Paramedics attending to a medical call June 26 found the 28-year-old Falin Johnston dead in an apartment suite in the 100 block of Henry Avenue. Police investigators believe Johnston fell and hit her head following an altercation with another person and deemed the incident a homicide after an autopsy.

Police sought public information on the whereabouts of 40-year-old Rebecca Marina Flett after the incident. Flett was arrested July 4 and charged with manslaughter. She remains in custody.

Police seek information on woman found dead on Young Street

9:31 AM

Police are reaching out to the public after a woman was found dead in a rear lane in the 500 block of Young Street on June 21.

Investigators say they have identified the woman but are not naming her at this time. She was found at around 7 a.m. The Winnipeg Police Service homicide unit has taken over the investigation.

The WPS is seeking any information on the incident, including residential or commercial video surveillance footage in the area. Those with information are urged to call the Homicide Unit at 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS.

Hearing for landfill blockade injunction adjourned

11:42 AM

A court hearing for a city injunction to remove protesters blocking access to a Winnipeg landfill has been adjourned until Thursday at noon.

The City of Winnipeg filed a notice of application for a court injunction Tuesday to halt a protest group’s nearly week-long blockade of the main road leading to the Brady Road landfill.

The court adjourned the hearing Wednesday morning to give the protesters time to get a lawyer.

Advocates for missing and murdered Indigenous women are blocking the road to the landfill while demanding governments support searches of Winnipeg-area landfills for human remains.

The action was spurred by the province’s refusal to support a search of the privately owned Prairie Green Landfill, just north of Winnipeg, for the remains of Indigenous women Morgan Harris and Marcedes Myran, who are believed to be victims of an alleged serial killer.
