Manitoba Hydro workers are preparing to strike if the Crown corporation and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2034 cannot reach a deal by Thursday.

In a release, IBEW 2034 said its members will walk off the job within a week if collective bargaining doesn’t produce a deal by July 20 at noon.

The two parties met on July 13 to discuss IBEW’s last offer, the union said, and proposed “palatable options that we felt would be appropriate to bring to the membership for ratification.”

Manitoba Hydro workers are preparing to strike if the Crown corporation and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2034 cannot reach a deal by Thursday.

“With these options came an ultimatum that if a deal has not been reached between IBEW and the corporation by Thursday… IBEW will be responding with a walk-out within seven days,” the union said in a statement Monday.

“We don’t take any form of strike action lightly. It is literally the last option to consider when negotiating a fair deal for our membership. There is a time when we must take a stand and implement action where necessary.”

IBEW 2034 represents about 2,300 Hydro employees, including staff who repair transmission lines, restore power during outages and work at northern generating stations.

Since June 28, it has taken various labour actions, including a complete withdrawal of standby services throughout the province and a restriction on overtime. The workers’ contract expired in February 2022.

According to the union, Manitoba Hydro has not taken reasonable actions to end the labour disruptions and members have shown strong support for the union and a desire to expand the strike.

“We have been at the bargaining table for 17 months and our members are, rightfully so, becoming increasingly frustrated,” the release stated.
