Man in custody after shots fired in Black River First Nation

10:00 AM

A man is in RCMP custody after shots were fired outside of a home in Black River First Nation early Monday.

Powerview RCMP were called at about 1:25 a.m. Officers were told a suspect had fired off the gun outside a home before several people went to confront the suspect at his own home.

The man allegedly took out a gun again, firing a shot at their vehicle. No one was struck. The suspect left the First Nation in a vehicle, RCMP said. Mounties found a suspect while driving to the scene and arrested him. Mounties found a rifle, a loaded magazine and open beer cans in the vehicle. The suspect failed a breath test.

A 42-year-old man, who received an immediate licence suspension and had his vehicle impounded, is charged with nine firearms offences.

One boy stabbed two youths and bear-sprayed a group of them before fleeing the scene on foot, RCMP said.

Officers found a suspect a short distance away. He was found to be in possession of a knife and bear spray, RCMP said Wednesday.

Two male youths, aged 14 and 16, from Thompson were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The younger boy suffered life-altering injuries, RCMP said.

Vacant home slated for demolition after second fire

4:46 PM

A vacant home in the Spence neighbourhood is slated for demolition, after suffering damage from multiple fires in recent years.

Firefighters responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 600 block of Furby Street around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a release.

Crews found smoke billowing from the structure and entered the building to battle the blaze from inside.

The fire was declared under control shortly before 7 a.m. No injuries were reported, WFPS said.

The house previously burned in August 2021. At that time, the building was determined to be a complete loss. WFPS is arranging for emergency demolition of the building, it said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This is the second home to be demolished in the 600 block of Furby Street as a result of fire damage.

New child-care centre slated for construction in Altona

5:13 PM

The Province of Manitoba broke ground Wednesday on a new child-care centre slated for construction in Altona.

The new facility will bring 98 new child-care spaces to the rural community, located roughly 114 kilometres south of Winnipeg. Twenty spaces will be reserved for infants, while 48 and 30 spaces will be reserved for preschool- and school-aged children, respectively.

Construction will cost around $4.1 million and is supported by the provincial and federal governments, Education Minister Wayne Ewasko said.

The new facility is slated to open in fall 2024. It will sit on land leased from Border Land School Division.

The province is on track to meet its commitment of creating 23,000 new regulated child-care spaces in Manitoba by 2026, with 12,000 spaces currently fulfilled or under development, Ewasko said.
