Suspect in custody after random stabbing

11:06 AM

A suspect is in police custody after a violent, random stabbing in the West End.

Police responded to multiple reports of a distressed male near Beverley Street and Wellington Avenue around 1 a.m. Friday, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a release.

Responding officers found a 29-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to the hospital in an unstable condition. He was later upgraded to stable condition, police said.

Investigators learned the victim was approached by an unknown man who asked for a cigarette. Unprovoked, the suspect began to stab the victim before fleeing the area.

Police located and arrested a suspect near Home Street and Notre Dame Avenue shortly after the attack.

A 24-year-old Winnipeg man is facing charges of aggravated assault. He remains in custody, police said.

The suspect fled before police arrived and no arrests have been made.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Four more liquor stores to close amid wage dispute

3:54 PM

Four more liquor stores will close Sunday amid a wage dispute between Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries and a worker’s union.

In a media release issued Saturday, the Crown corporation said the stores — located in Bunns Creek, Charleswood, True North Square and Tyndall Market — will remain closed indefinitely.

“MBLL must reduce the number of Liquor Marts open for business to ensure we can effectively manage inventory allocation and distribution to the remaining open locations,” it said.

Seven other liquor stores closed Friday.

The Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union is seeking a 3.3 percent wage increase for 1,400 workers who have been on strike since mid-July.
