The province’s law enforcement oversight agency is investigating after a man suffered a broken rib and fractured bone in his face while Winnipeg police officers were arresting him early Wednesday morning.

The Independent Investigation Unit said Winnipeg police notified them of the incident on Wednesday. The police service told the IIU that officers were called to a parking lot on the 1500 block of Regent Avenue at 5:02 a.m. Wednesday for a domestic disturbance.

The officers saw the man and woman and tried to talk to the man, who then ran before turning and confronting police, according to the IIU. An officer used their Taser on the man, who was then arrested.

He was taken to the Health Sciences Centre for an assessment and doctors found he had the fracture in his face and a broken rib. The IIU did not make clear how the man came to be injured during the arrest.

The IIU has asked anyone with information or video footage of the arrest to call investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
