Darian Lourenco has nothing but great things to say about a friend, Jarrid.

“Jarrid is a breath of fresh air,” Lourenco says. “If you walk into a room, it is sunshine. He is unbelievable.”

Lourenco got to know Jarrid after signing up to volunteer at St. Amant, the non-profit organization that supports more than 2,000 Manitobans with developmental disabilities, autism and acquired brain injuries.

Darian Lourenco volunteers with the St. Amant PALS program, which matches volunteers who are looking for a friend with people supported by St. Amant who are also looking for a friend.

The two were matched through St. Amant’s PALS (Partnerships through Activities, Learning and Sharing) program, which pairs friend-seeking volunteers with people supported by St. Amant who are also looking for friends.

The two have developed a deep bond since being matched in late 2021.

“I view Jarrid as a brother,” says Lourenco, 24. “Every single time I hang out with him it’s never a bad day… because of the unbelievably positive attitude he has.”

The biggest thing they bond over is their shared love of music.

Sometimes hanging out together simply looks like spending time in a lounge at St. Amant, listening to favourites such as Michael Jackson, the Beatles, Frankie Valli and John Mayer.

Jarrid is non-verbal, so forming the relationship has required the friends to really be in tune with each other.

“It’s learning those small little cues,” Lourenco says. “It takes a while, and I’m still learning, but we’re building it day by day.”

Lourenco’s mother worked with St. Amant for a few years when she was in her early 20s, and when Lourenco expressed interest in volunteering, she thought it would be a good fit.

Lourenco, a lifelong soccer player, has been positively affected by numerous coaches and wanted to be that sort of positive influence for someone else.

In addition to having a friend in Jarrid, Lourenco says one of the best parts about being involved at St. Amant is the caring group of people who work there.

“I’ve worked in teams my entire life, and that’s something I love: being supported by people who want to see you succeed in your role,” Lourenco says. “That’s 100 per cent what the people at St. Amant are about. It’s absolutely brilliant.”

Friendships and unpaid relationships are critical things that can be missing from the lives of people with developmental disabilities, says Sarah Van Mackelbergh, a supervisor in St. Amant’s volunteer department.

The St. Amant Centre created the PALS program more than five years ago.

The organization created the PALS program more than five years ago to fill that void.

“Everybody deserves unpaid relationships in their life, should they want them,” Van Mackelbergh says. “Everybody needs a friend.”

St. Amant staff members work hard to match people based on shared interests.

If a pair isn’t jelling after their first few get-togethers, staff find new people to match them with.

“We never give up on finding a meaningful match for someone,” Van Mackelbergh says.

St. Amant is looking for more people to join the PALS program. Anyone interested can apply online at stamant.ca.

“No one should hesitate to get involved,” Lourenco says. “It was one of the best decisions of my young adult life and something I’m definitely happy I got into.”
