Bombers lead Riders 14-3 after Q1
3:47 PM
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers look like a team eager to avenge their Labour Day loss.
The blue and gold have jumped out to a 14-3 lead over the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders after the first quarter of play in Saturday’s Banjo Bowl at IG Field.
The Riders got on the board first with a field goal, but the Bombers responded with touchdowns from short-yardage quarterback Dakota Prukop and running back Brady Oliveira.
Bombers score six touchdowns on six drives, take huge lead into half
4:37 PM
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are stomping the Saskatchewan Roughriders 42-6 at the half of Saturday’s Banjo Bowl at IG Field.
The Bombers have scored six touchdowns on six drives to take a commanding lead after two quarters of play. Quarterback Zach Collaros has completed 16-of-17 passes for 285 yards and five touchdowns.
Firefighters respond to Bannatyne Avenue home
4:54 PM
Fire officials are reminding the public to be careful around open flames, after an unattended candle caused a home in the Centennial neighbourhood to burn.
Around 2:18 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to reports of a fire in a two-storey house in the 500 block of Bannatyne Avenue, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said in a release.
Firefighters attacked the fire from inside the home, declaring it under control in roughly 20 minutes.
“Preliminary observations suggest the cause of the fire was accidental and related to an unattended candle,” WFPS said.
Residents are reminded to never leave candles unattended, avoid burning candles in drafty areas and keep them away from children.
NDP recommit to building Eriksdale ER
5:11 PM
The Manitoba NDP is reinforcing its commitment to build a new emergency room in Eriksdale, should the party win the upcoming provincial election.
NDP officials, including leader Wab Kinew, met with community members and First Nations leaders in Eriksdale Saturday to share plans to address limited emergency health services in the area, the NDP stated in a news release.
The community’s emergency room, located roughly 130 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, closed temporarily last year — owing, in part, to staffing shortages. It has since reopened, but with limited hours and for only a few days per week.
In August, the NDP promised to fully staff and build a new emergency room in Eriksdale as part of a provincial health-care recruitment strategy.
Bombers add field goal, continue to stifle Riders
5:14 PM
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have a 45-6 lead over the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders after three quarters of play in Saturday’s Banjo Bowl at IG Field.
Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros threw five touchdowns in the first half, and almost had his sixth in the third if it wasn’t for a drop by Kenny Lawler. The Bombers would settle for a Sergio Castillo field goal which ended up being the only points in quarter No. 3.
The Chicks reschedule Winnipeg concert
5:19 PM
An unspecified family emergency has forced The Chicks to reschedule their concert next week.
The all-female, country music band (formerly known as the Dixie Chicks) was slated to perform at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday, however, “due to an urgent family matter” the show has been rescheduled for Monday.
“The Chicks apologize for any inconvenience caused and look forward to seeing everyone on Monday,” Canada Life Centre said in a Facebook post.
The doors will open at 7 p.m. and the concert begins at 8 p.m.
People seeking more information are asked to contact the service provider from which they purchased tickets.
Bombers demolish Riders to claim Banjo Bowl
5:48 PM
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers avenged their Labour Day loss with a dominant 51-6 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Saturday’s Banjo Bowl at IG Field.
The win improves Winnipeg to 10-3 on the year, while the Riders, who won 32-30 in overtime last weekend, drop to 6-6.
The Bombers controlled the game from the start as they scored touchdowns on their first six possessions.
The Blue and Gold return to action next Saturday when they visit the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-7) at Tim Hortons Field.
