Missing senior last seen in St. John’s area

City police are searching for a missing senior.

Elaine Greenfield, 79, was last seen in the St. John’s area of the city at about 1 p.m. Thursday.

She is described as 5-0 in height, with a very thin build, and long black and grey hair in a ponytail.

Greenfield was wearing a dark olive-green insulated parka, pea-green khaki pants and dark-coloured rubber shoes.

Man injured in attack near legislative building

Winnipeg police are looking for suspects after a man in his 60s was randomly assaulted while he was walking near the Manitoba Legislative Building early Thursday morning.

Two males confronted the victim and demanded money near Assiniboine Avenue and Kennedy Street at about 1:15 a.m., said police.

Officers were alerted after someone spotted the victim, who had upper-body injuries, in the 400 block of Portage Avenue.

He was in stable condition, said police.

Anyone with information is asked to call the major crimes unit at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.

Main Street hotel fire displaces 15

11:12 AM

Fifteen people were displaced after a fire at a Main Street hotel early Friday morning. No injuries were reported.

A fire in one of the rooms at a three-storey hotel in the 700 block of Main Street occurred just after 6 a.m. Sept. 22, and when fire crews arrived, smoke was in the building. The fire had been kept under control by the building’s sprinkler system, but the building sustained significant water damage, the City of Winnipeg stated in a news release.

The 15 displaced residents received assistance from the city’s Emergency Social Services team, the news release stated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and no damage estimates have been released.

Two men stabbed while leaving Winnipeg lounge

Two men are in hospital in stable condition after they were stabbed while leaving a lounge in the 600 block of Balmoral Street on Thursday night, according to Winnipeg police.

The victims were confronted by a group of people who appeared to be already involved in a fight at about 9:30 p.m.

The pair managed to escape and contact police. The suspects fled.

Woman sought in Cross Lake hit-and-run

11:44 AM

Two Cross Lake residents were seriously hurt in a hit-and-run Wednesday. RCMP are investigating and are asking the public for help.

The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m. on the main road in Cross Lake and was reported to police about six hours later. A vehicle leaving the parking lot of the Cross Lake Inn struck two adults who had been walking along the road, and the vehicle fled the scene.

A 59-year-old woman was transported to hospital outside of the community, and a 59-year-old man with life-threatening injuries was taken to hospital in Winnipeg.

Police are asking the public to help identify a woman captured on security video, saying they want to identify her because she might have information about the hit-and-run collision. They’re asking anyone with information to call Cross Lake RCMP at 204-676-2600 or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Advance polls open Saturday

12:21 PM

Advance polls open Saturday at more than 300 locations across Manitoba before the provincial election Oct. 3.

Advance polling stations will be open Sept. 23 to Sept. 30, and Manitobans can vote at any advance polling place, regardless of their home riding.

Elections Manitoba is encouraging voters to bring their voter information cards with them. The card can be used as one piece of identification. All voters need to bring ID, either one piece of government-issued photo identification bearing their address, or two other pieces of ID.
