Jets back up to full strength

3:22 PM

The Winnipeg Jets had all of their projected regulars at practice for the first time in training camp Wednesday.

Forwards Mark Schiefele, Kyle Connor, Gabriel Vilardi and Morgan Barron, who were victims of flu bug that ran rampant through the locker-room last week, all practised without limitations at the Hockey For All Centre.

Meanwhile, forward Nikolaj Ehlers and defencemen Nate Schmidt and Declan Chisholm, who all nursed injuries that kept them out of the lineup, were also practising.

Perhaps the most notable is Ehlers, who experienced neck spasms after a workout on the first day of training camp. Head coach Bowness said there’s no guarantee he’ll play Thursday against the visiting Ottawa Senators — the Jets’ final pre-season game.

Defencemen Kyle Capobianco and Henri Nikkanen skated in a separate session from the team on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Viel was the lone player left in camp who was not skating with the team on Wednesday, and it quickly became apparent why. The 26-year-old from Rimouski, Que., was waived by the Jets Wednesday morning, with the intent he starts the year with the Manitoba Moose in the American Hockey League.

Woman shot outside lounge

12:59 PM

A woman was shot during an altercation outside a lounge on McDermot Avenue early Sunday.

The Winnipeg Police Service said the woman was transported to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable after the incident in the 200 block of McDermot Avenue at about 2:30 a.m.

Police said the altercation involved a group of people.

“The victim stepped in, at which point she was shot,” a news release Wednesday said.

A suspect was later arrested in the 200 block of Stradbrook Avenue, and officers seized cocaine, MDMA, psilocybin, four gun magazines with live ammunition and $10,000 in cash.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with aggravated assault, and many firearms and drug charges.

Missing Tataskweyak Cree Nation woman found dead in woods

10:34 AM

Mounties are investigating after a 41-year-old woman was found dead in the woods near a remote northern First Nation.

The woman, 41, was last seen shopping in Thompson on Sept. 27. She got a ride back toward Tataskweyak Cree Nation, and was dropped off approximately one kilometre outside the community to walk home through the woods, Manitoba RCMP said in a release.

She was reported missing three days later, prompting police searches in the area. Searchers found her dead in the surrounding woods Sunday.

An autopsy is underway and the investigation ongoing, police said.
