Teen robbed downtown by masked muggers

12:50 PM

A teenage boy, allegedly part of a group armed with weapons, is charged with mugging another teen downtown Monday night.

The incident happened while the victim was waiting at a bus stop at Fort Street and Graham Avenue at about 7 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service said.

A group of suspects wore masks and were armed with knives and what appeared to be guns, the WPS said. The suspects threatened to kill the victim, then stole his property and fled on foot, police said.

Police later saw some suspects and chased them on foot, and one of the suspects discarded a firearm, police said. He was taken into custody in a nearby park while the other suspects ran off.

The firearm was a BB gun, the WPS said.

The teen is charged with armed robbery using a firearm, and other offences.

He was detained in youth custody.

Police said the victim and a 30-year-old woman were approached by two males they knew when a fight started and the victim was attacked by the two males. The two suspects fled the scene.

Two men from La Broquerie, ages 33 and 30, have been charged with aggravated assault.

A 19-year-old man is facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death, after a 17-year-old boy was killed in a crash at St. Mary’s Road and Guay Avenue a year ago.

David Bunguke, the lone passenger in the car, died after the vehicle crashed into a utility pole on a sidewalk next to the northbound lanes of St. Mary’s on Oct. 18, 2022.

Speed and the manner of driving were allegedly factors in the collision, said Winnipeg police, who announced the charge Tuesday.

The driver, then 18, was in serious condition in hospital following the crash.
