Man charged in hardware store shoplifting spree

12:24 PM

Winnipeg police property crimes investigators arrested a man accused of a string of high-cost shoplifting thefts at city hardware stores on Thursday.

Police say the same suspect hit 15 hardware stores in the city during the spree from June 20 to Sept. 13.

Police allege the suspect would grab items, ranging from air conditioners to power tools, then leave without paying. All together, it’s alleged more than $22,000 worth of goods were stolen. In one incident, police say, the suspect took out an axe and lunged at a loss prevention guard before leaving. No one was hurt.

A 31-year-old man has been charged with 14 counts of theft under $5,000 and one count of robbery. He remains in custody.

The Boss was supposed to perform at the downtown arena next month in what would have been his first Winnipeg concert, but postponed his remaining 2023 dates while he recovers from a peptic ulcer.

Tickets purchased for the original dates are valid for the new 2024 dates.

Teen’s leg broken during Winnipeg police arrest: IIU

10:22 AM

The province’s police watchdog is investigating after a youth’s leg was broken during an arrest by Winnipeg police on Thursday.

The Independent Investigation Unit said city police were patrolling near 300 Magnus Ave. at about 12:50 a.m. when they saw two teen boys they thought had a weapon.

The officers got out of the vehicle, and the teens ran, the IIU said. Once the officers caught up with the teens and went to arrest them, one of them tried to run again.

The IIU said the teen suffered an injury when police tried to stop him. It is unclear how exactly the boy was injured.

The youth was taken to the Grace Hospital for treatment, where medical staff determined he had a broken tibia and fibula.

The IIU is asking for any witnesses or people with video of the incident to call investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
