The University of Manitoba Bisons football team needed a miracle and they got one.
In order to qualify for the Canada West playoffs, the Herd had to win or to not lose by more than 14 points in Saturday’s regular-season finale in Calgary against the Dinos.
Calgary had a 35-15 lead with 12 seconds left and just needed to run out the clock to secure the final post-season spot.
Unfortunately for the Dinos, disaster struck. On a second and five from their own 25, Calgary handed the ball off to running back Matthieu Clarke.
Bisons defensive back Stephen Adamopoulos made the play of the season and punched it out. Fellow defensive back Nick Conway scooped it up and took it 30 yards to the end zone to make it a 35-21 game with no time left on the clock. An extra point convert wouldn’t have done them any good, so the Herd trotted out the offence to go for two.
Quarterback Jackson Tachinski connected with DeShawn Le Jour to make it a 35-23 final score to punch Manitoba’s ticket to the post-season.
The Bisons and Dinos both finish the year at 3-5 but the U of M gets the edge due to season point differential.
Tachinski completed 18-of-33 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns.
The No. 4-seeded Herd will hit the road to take on the top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds (6-2) nextSaturday. UBC beat the Bisons 56-10 at home back on Sept. 16.
