Jets lose 3-2 in overtime to Canadiens

9:19 PM

Justin Barron’s power play goal 69 seconds into overtime was the difference as the visiting Montreal Canadiens beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2.

Josh Anderson and Christian Dvorak had staked the Habs to a 2-0 lead, but Gabe Vilardi and Cole Perfetti helped rally the home team.

However, a tripping penalty to Nikolaj Ehlers proved costly.

Winnipeg falls to 18-9-3 on the year, including 6-1-1 in the last eight games. Montreal improves to 14-13-4.

The Jets return to action on Wednesday night when they host the Detroit Red Wings.

Fatal crash in RM of St. Clements

1:20 PM

A 36-year-old man was killed when his vehicle went into a ditch and struck a concrete driveway approach on Henderson Highway north of Winnipeg on Friday night.

Patrolling RCMP officers saw a heavily damaged vehicle in the east ditch in the Rural Municipality of St. Clements at about 11:35 p.m.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“Investigation has determined that the vehicle was heading southbound when it crossed over the centre line and entered the ditch, where it struck a concrete driveway approach,” RCMP said in a news release Monday.

“The male was not wearing a seatbelt.”

Bombers re-sign Neufeld

11:58 AM

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and all-star guard Patrick Neufeld have agreed to a one-year contract extension.

The three-time CFL all-star will return for his 11th season in Winnipeg and 13th in the league after playing his first two seasons in Saskatchewan.

The Regina native started 17 regular season games and both playoff contests this past year and helped running back Brady Oliveira lead the league in rushing.

Neufeld is the first domino to fall on the o-line as centre Chris Kolankowski, guard Geoff Gray, right tackle Jermarcus Hardrick, and left tackle Stanley Bryant all remain unsigned.

The stabbing happened in broad daylight, just west of Fort Street and close to the Winnipeg Police Service’s headquarters, at about 1 p.m. The victim underwent emergency surgery but died of her injuries. Her name and age have not yet been released.

As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests had been made. At the time, police were seeking witnesses.
