University College of the North is recruiting future lawyers to enrol in a new preparatory program launching in the fall.
Starting in 2024-25, UCN — in partnership with the University of Manitoba’s Robson Hall — will begin offering new courses developed to support northern and Indigenous students interested in pursuing law school.
President and vice-chancellor Doug Lauvstad said providing opportunities to complete pre-law at the post-secondary institute will help address workforce shortages in the North.
“UCN is responding to the pressing need for lawyers in northern Manitoba who live in the North and understand the life circumstances of northern and Indigenous Manitobans,” Lauvstad said in a news release Wednesday.
The pre-law stream will include enhanced advising, student counseling and mentorship opportunities to prepare pupils for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and law school.
The specialty classes will be delivered in Thompson and The Pas.
The Northern Bar Association, Law Society of Manitoba, Legal Aid Manitoba, Robson Hall, and Provincial Court Judge Todd Rambow designed the program.
