Lawes captures Manitoba women’s curling crown

Kaitlyn Lawes captured the Manitoba women’s curling provincial title Sunday afternoon in Morden with a thrilling 9-8 victory over Assiniboine’s Beth Peterson in the championship game.
With the win, Lawes, the No. 4-ranked team in the country, will wear the Buffalo jackets next month in Calgary at nationals (Feb. 16-25).
This is the first time Lawes has won the event as a skip.
Jets place Chisholm on waivers

The Winnipeg Jets placed defenceman Declan Chisholm on waivers Sunday as they attempt to sort out a crowded roster situation.
Chisholm 24, will report to the Manitoba Moose if he isn’t claimed by another team by Monday afternoon. He’s appeared in just two NHL games this year, and four over his career, and has spent the majority of this season as a healthy scratch.
Winnipeg is currently at its 23-man maximum, and that’s with forwards Mark Scheifele and David Gustafsson both on injured reserve. The pair are likely to be ready to play when the Jets return from their player and All-Star break on Feb. 6 in Pittsburgh, so something has to give.
Peterson advances to Manitoba Scotties final, plays Lawes at 2 p.m.

Assiniboine’s Beth Peterson defeated East St. Paul’s Kate Cameron 8-4 Sunday morning in Morden in the semi-finals of the Manitoba women’s curling provincials.
With the win, Peterson will now meet tournament No. 1 seed Kaitlyn Lawes at 2 p.m. inside the Access Event Centre for the right to wear the Buffalo jacket at next month’s Canadian Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary (Feb. 16-25).
Cameron, the No. 8-ranked outfit in the national rankings, will know later today if she has one of the two wild card berths to the Scotties depending how the B.C. and Alberta provincial finals shake out.
