Ella Gray hammered 12 kills and added six service aces to pace the Manitoba Bisons to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-12, 25-14) triumph over the UBC Okanagan Heat in Canada West women’s volleyball quarter-final action at Investors Group Athletic Centre Saturday afternoon.
The win completed a sweep of the best-of-three series.
“(Gray) was really good,” said Bisons head coach Ken Bentley. “I mean, she had a great weekend — not just today. Her six rotation game was just really solid and she served the ball great. She’s really good on serve receive and her attack was on point.”

Left side Ella Gray had 12 kills and six service aces as Manitoba completed a two-game sweep of UBC Okanagan on Saturday.
As a result, the Bisons advanced to next weekend’s conference semifinals against the Fraser Valley Cascades.
Manitoba will host the best-of-three series that is expected to go Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, if necessary.
Andi Almonte had a game-high 14 kills for the hosts, who also got 11 kills from Light Uchechukwu. Eve Catojo had another big night with seven kills and five assisted blocks while fellow middle Brenna Bedosky supplied four kills and six assisted blocks.
Setter Katreena Bentley had 40 assists and six assisted blocks.
“We kind of had an idea of what we wanted to do and we just stayed really consistent in how we applied ourselves at the net,” added Bentley. “Our serving pressure all weekend was really good and we got them out of system enough to really get two blockers on their hitters a bunch of times and that was obviously helpful for us.”
Hellen Luvizetti Lacava and Olivia Tymkiw led the Heat with 10 and eight kills, respectively
The third-seeded Cascades eliminated the MacEwan Griffins in straight games during their weekend quarter-final while the fifth-seeded Alberta Pandas, 2-0 winners of their quarter-final series with the No. 4 Trinity Western Spartans, will travel to UBC for a semfinal series with the No. 1-ranked Thunderbirds.
UBC completed a sweep of the eighth-seeded Thompson Rivers WolfPack Saturday.
MANITOBA MEN ELIMINATED: Isaac Heslinga had 19 kills to lead the Alberta Golden Bears to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-14) victory over the Manitoba Bisons in Canada West men’s volleyball quarter-final action to win the best-of-three series 2-1 in Edmonton.
Karil Dadash adeh and Eric Ogaranko had 12 kills apiece for the Bisons, who opened the series with a 3-2 win Thursday. Alberta responded with a 3-2 win in Game 2 Friday.
In Calgary, the hometown Mount Royal Cougars got 24 kills from Chris Byam to beat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (21-25, 28-26, 25-21, 20-25, 15-9) and tie their best-of-three quarter-final at 1-1.
Nigel Nielsen led the Wesmen with 16 kills.
A deciding Game 3 will be played Sunday.
