The Winnipeg Sea Bears have added more homegrown skill to their backcourt.
The Canadian Elite Basketball League club announced Wednesday that it has signed 6-4 Canadian point guard Mason Bourcier, who will return to the CEBL for his fourth season after spending the winter with the Manchester Giants of the British Basketball League.
The 24-year-old from Kelowna, B.C., has played three seasons in the CEBL through the league’s U Sports developmental program.

Former Trinity Western star Mason Bourcier returns for a fourth season in the CEBL, but he will be moving from Calgary to Winnipeg in 2024.
In his fifth and final U Sports season with the Trinity Western Spartans in 2022-23, Bourcier broke the Canada West record for triple doubles. In his final year, he averaged 20.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 6.7 assists to earn first-team all conference honours.
Last summer, he helped the Surge make an appearance in the CEBL final during the team’s first campaign in Calgary. He has previous league experience with the Newfoundland Growlers and Fraser Valley Bandits.
“I had the chance to play with Stef Smith in Calgary (in 2023) and I thought he made a huge jump from Guelph the year before to last year in Calgary,” said Bourcier via phone from Manchester. “And I thought me going to Winnipeg could allow me to take a very similar jump to the one that he took. As much as I want to be close to home, I have to put my development as a player above everything…
“And the fans and arena in Winnipeg are top notch. You’re not going to beat that.”
Bourcier becomes the third Canadian signed by the Sea Bears the 2024 season, joining forward Chad Posthumus and guard Alex Campbell.

The team also re-signed 2023 CEBL MVP, import Teddy Allen earlier this month.
“It’s really important to have good quality Canadian players and we felt like Mason, with his size and versatility, can be a good upgrade for our team,” said Sea Bears GM and head coach Mike Taylor.
Bourcier said he is rounding into form in the BBL after being plagued by an early season turf toe injury.
“It really messed me up — I could barely walk for a while and I was trying to find my way back the first two months,” said Bourcier. “So that kind of set me down on the depth chart but then halfway through the year I ended up starting again.”
