Jets beat Kraken 3-0

The Winnipeg Jets used a strong third period to down the Seattle Kraken 3-0 on Friday night.

Mark Scheifele, Adam Lowry and Nikolaj Ehlers all scored in the final frame, while goaltender Laurent Brossoit made 17 saves for the shutout.

The Jets improve to 40-17-5 on the season and now sit first in the Central Division, first in the Western Conference and second in the NHL in terms of point percentage.

They’ll wrap up this quick road trip on Saturday night in Vancouver.

Wesmen lose heartbreaker to Gaels

Cameron Bett scored 16 points and added five rebounds to lead the Queen’s Gaels to a 77-76 triumph over the Winnipeg Wesmen in quarter-final action at the U Sports national men’s basketball championship in Quebec City Friday afternoon.

Winnipeg had possession of the ball and a chance to win the game with five seconds remaining only to have Queen’s guard Cole Syllas block Wesmen forward Elijah Mensah’s three-point attempt at the buzzer.

Shawn Maranan replied with a game-high 19 points for the winners, who will play a consolation semifinal Saturday.

Jets add defenceman Miller from Devils

The Winnipeg Jets have acquired veteran defenceman Colin Miller from the New Jersey Devils to bolster their blue line.

A 2026 fourth-round draft pick is going the other way.

Miller, 31, is a pending unrestricted free agent who is making US $1.85 million. He is a right-shot who has played 507 career regular-season games and 40 playoff games. He had four goals and four assists in 41 games with the Devils.

Miller was a member of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18, putting up a career-high 41 points (1o goals, 31 assists) in 82 games, then helping them get to the Stanley Cup final (after beating the Jets in the Western Conference Final), where they lost to the Washington Capitals.

City police officer’s ammo lost

Winnipeg police are searching for rifle cartridges that were lost when a magazine containing ammunition fell off an officer’s belt while working.

“Efforts are continuing to locate the magazine,” the Winnipeg Police Service said on X , formerly known as Twitter, Friday afternoon.

Anyone who finds the rifle ammo or magazine can turn it in at any police station or call 204-986-6222.

Police did not say where or when the ammo was lost other than “recently.”

Building on Notre Dame Avenue cleared because of carbon monoxide

Firefighters evacuated a building on Notre Dame Avenue after a carbon monoxide buildup.

Crews were sent to the three-storey building in the 400 block of Notre Dame at 8:41 a.m. Firefighters worked to evacuate the occupants and ventilated the carbon monoxide from the building. No injuries were reported, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said.

The WFPS said it is believed a malfunctioning furnace was the source of the carbon monoxide.

Manitoba Hydro made the necessary repairs.

City creates email notifications for sewage spills

The City of Winnipeg has created a notification system that will email subscribers every time untreated sewage spills are reported.

The city has been reporting such sewage spills online for nearly 20 years, but the email option is new. Anyone can sign up to receive the notifications, which will include a link to the incident report page.

The reports explain what happened to cause the leak and what actions the city took to resolve it.

Police seek tips a year after Main Street hotel killing

City police are asking the public for tips regarding a slaying that happened one year ago.

Treymaine Traverse, a 33-year-old member of O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation (South Indian Lake) who lived in Winnipeg, was found dead in a hotel suite on the 600 block of Main Street at about 10:45 a.m. on March 9, 2023.

The Winnipeg Police Service’s homicide unit is still investigating the slaying. Investigators are asking anyone with information regarding the killing, including people Traverse had contact with or his whereabouts before his death, to call them at 204-986-6508, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.

“No information is considered too small and may bring closure to Treymaine’s family,” the WPS said in a new release Friday.

Daylight time begins early Sunday

Manitobans are reminded to set their clocks ahead one hour this weekend.

Under the Official Time Act, daylight time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends with a return to standard time on the first Sunday in November.

The official time change happens at 2 a.m. Sunday, when clocks will move forward to 3 a.m.

Jets acquire Toffoli from Devils

The Winnipeg Jets have made a big deadline-day splash, acquiring winger Tyler Toffoli from the New Jersey Devils.

A pair of draft picks, believed to be a second- and third-rounder, are going the other way.

Toffoli, 31, is a pending unrestricted free agent who is making US$4.25 million. He has 26 goals and 18 assists through 61 games.

He will immediately bolster the club’s top six forwards, which include Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Gabe Vilardi, Sean Monahan and Nikolaj Ehlers.
