Jets lose 5-0 to Canucks

The Winnipeg Jets closed out a quick two-game road trip with a 5-0 loss to the Vancouver Canucks Saturday night.

Thatcher Demko and Casey DeSmith combined for a 22-save shutout, while J.T. Miller, Nils Hoglander, Phil Di Giuseppe, Elias Pettersson and Pius Suter scored for the home team.

Winnipeg had played the previous night in Seattle, beating the Kraken 3-0.

The Jets are now 40-18-5 on the season and start a three-game homestand on Monday against the Washington Capitals.

Bisons claim Canada West volleyball crown

The Manitoba Bisons are heading to the U Sports women’s volleyball nationals as Canada West champions.

Light Uchechukwu, Ella Gray and Raya Surinx had 15 kills apiece to lead the third-ranked Bisons to a 3-2 (25-17, 25-17, 24-26, 23-25, 15-12) triumph over the No. 1-ranked UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver Saturday night.

It was the first Canada West title in Manitoba program history.

Both the Bisons and Thunderbirds entered Saturday’s action having already clinched berths in the eight-team national championship, scheduled for March 15-17 in Hamilton, Ont.

Wesmen lose second straight at nationals

Kevin Civil scored 23 points to lead Université du Québec à Montréal Citadins to an 88-80 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen in consolation semifinal action at the U Sports national men’s basketball championship in Quebec City Saturday afternoon.

The Wesmen, who dropped a 77-76 decision to the Queen’s Gaels in Friday’s quarter-final round, were eliminated from further play.

Shawn Maranan had 27 points and seven assists for Winnipeg.
