WASHINGTON, D.C. — Alex Ovechkin scores his 25th and 26th goals of the season to spark Washington’s third-period surge and an eventual 3-0 Capitals’ triumph over the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets (44-22-5) have posted three consecutive defeats to end a five-game road trip after starting out with a couple of wins. Winnipeg hosts the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night.

The clubs were tied 0-0 after 40 minutes. John Carlson scored a power-play goal just 1:21 into the final frame. Ovechkin beefed up the lead for the hosts at 3:36 and then added his second of the afternoon at 12:00 on a breakaway as Washington improved to (35-26-9).

Washington goalie Charlie Lindgren was sensational, particularly in the first two periods, to register a 27-save shutout, his fifth of the year. Winnipeg has been shut out six times this season.

Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, who was pulled during a 6-3 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday, wasn’t at his sharpest against the Capitals, either, stopping 19 of 22 shots.
