The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction — the country’s leading research body studying the physical effects of extreme weather events — is opening an office in Winnipeg.

The independent not-for-profit focused on helping Canadian property owners, businesses and communities prepare for and adapt to the impacts of severe weather events was founded in 1997. It is based out of the engineering department at Western University (London, Ont.) and also has an office in Toronto.

The Winnipeg location on the main floor of 191 Broadway will be its first outside Ontario.

Paul Kovacs, ICLR executive director and founder said: “We’re excited to set up in Winnipeg and let people see what they can do to protect themselves. It’s a thrill for us to be in Winnipeg.”

The 2,700-square-foot space comes, in part, due to the long-standing relationship ICLR has with Wawanesa Insurance.

Wawanesa made the space available when the Winnipeg property and casualty insurance company moved to a brand-new headquarters at Carlton Street and Graham Avenue.

The ICLR is sponsored by the insurance industry; Wawanesa has an executive on its board.

Graham Haigh, Wawanesa senior vice-president and chief operations officer for Western Canada, said: “ICLR is a leader in providing property owners, businesses, insurers, governments and academic institutions with high-quality information on reducing the risk of extreme weather on Canadian homes, businesses and communities.”

ICLR said its new Climate Resilience Centre will serve all of Canada, allowing its research to reach even more stakeholders and help the country better prepare for expected increases in extreme weather.

The Winnipeg hub will be used to promote such technologies and strategies to officials in industries including insurance, homebuilding and building code officials.
