Silver among five Winnipeggers named members of Order of Canada

Bob Silver, a longtime businessman and philanthropist, was one of five Winnipeggers invested as members of the Order of Canada by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon in Ottawa Thursday.

Silver, former chancellor of the University of Winnipeg, is an advocate of inclusivity who created the Opportunity Fund to offer financial support to students in need. The president and co-owner of Western Glove Works (Silver Jeans) is also the chairman of FP Newspapers Inc.. which owns the Winnipeg Free Press. He has served on various boards, including the Millennium Library Community Campaign.

Dorothy Dobbie, a former Progressive Conservative MP for Winnipeg, was also honoured. The publisher and broadcaster is a proponent for arts and culture as past president of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. She is currently president of the International Peace Garden.

Internationally renowned for his work on kidney transplants, Dr. David Nicholas Rush was also recognized. A teacher and clinician-scientist at Health Sciences Centre, Rush’s research has helped improve patient survival rates.

The Governor General also honoured musician Gérard Jean, known for his Franco-Manitoban anthem Histoire d’antan. He has composed countless songs over the years, in addition to his dedication to the province’s francophone choirs.

Devoting her life to Manitoba’s children, Jan Sanderson was also made member of the Order of Canada. She has helmed multiple government agencies over the last number of decades, including Healthy Child Manitoba.
