A man is in custody after two people were slain on Minegoziibe Anishinabe late Sunday night.

Winnipegosis RCMP were sent to a report of shots fired on West Road on the First Nation, formerly known as Pine Creek, at about 11:30 p.m. Officers gave an injured 34-year-old man emergency medical care, but he died at the scene.

Five hours later, the body of a 52-year-old woman was found in the area where the male victim had been found.

A suspect was identified. A standoff with the 19-year-old man began at about 5:25 a.m. Shots were fired at RCMP officers from the home he was in, but none were injured.

A man tried to flee in an off-road vehicle but was arrested by officers, including a canine unit.

Charges have not yet been formally laid, RCMP said Monday afternoon.

Minegoziibe Anishinabe is a roughly 110-kilometre drive north of Dauphin.
