A water bomber was used to dump foam on a fire at a remote wilderness camp near Flin Flon on Sunday.

RCMP said a person passing by on Lake Athapapskow called police at about 1:30 p.m after seeing a significant amount of smoke, thinking a wildfire might be the cause.

Officers went to Camp Whitney by boat and found the camp’s main kitchen fully engulfed in flames. The flames had also reached several nearby structures, RCMP said in a news release Tuesday.

Provincial fire crews sent a water bomber for the camp, and Flin Flon firefighters used water pumps to extinguish the blaze, which destroyed the kitchen building but was contained to the camp area.

The camp can be rented through the City of Flin Flon. RCMP said a group that had rented the camp left late Sunday morning, and a caretaker then closed the camp.

“The RCMP investigation has not found anything suspicious at this time,” police said of the fire.
