Driver clocked at 202 km/h after Perimeter Highway race: police

A 19-year-old man is facing more than $5,000 in fines and a licence suspension after allegedly racing another driver, blowing a red light and hitting a speed of 202 km/h on the Perimeter Highway Sunday night.

Winnipeg police said officers were doing speed enforcement on the Perimeter at about 10:30 p.m., when a Honda Civic was clocked at 179 km/h while racing near Wyper Road in the Rural Municipality of Macdonald.

The driver twice failed to stop for police, went through a red light at the Perimeter and McGillivray Boulevard, and accelerated to 202 km/h while fleeing, a news release said.

Officers caught up to the driver at his home and issued tickets for careless driving, racing and two each for speeding and failing to stop for police.

The driver was also given an immediate seven-day administrative suspension for allegedly racing, and a serious offence notice, which means they must plead to Manitoba Public Insurance to keep their licence.

The Winnipeg Police Service took over traffic enforcement of the South Perimeter Highway from the RCMP earlier this year.
